Black cats are usually the last ones to be adopted, spending most of their lives in shelters.
Despite their charm and mystery, these sleek felines face an unfair stigma that dates back centuries. Many shelters report that black cats take two to three times longer to be adopted compared to lighter-colored cats. Superstitions linking them to bad luck, and even the difficulty of photographing their dark coats for adoption listings, play a big role in their overlooked fate. A study by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) found that appearance strongly influences adoption rates, and black animals are often passed over simply because they “don’t stand out” in photos. Yet, shelter workers insist they’re some of the most affectionate, loyal, and gentle cats around.
It’s an ironic twist, the very cats once worshipped in ancient Egypt now wait the longest for a home. Maybe it’s time we remember that luck has nothing to do with love.
